Native Seed Bank
At Pumakawa we have a native seed bank unique to the province of Córdoba, Argentina with 17 species collected over 3 years. We carry out the process of collection, selection, drying and storage.
In 2011 we provided 150 schools with half a million seeds to create a stock of seedlings of native species. Half a million seeds of twelve native species were distributed for the publication of the collection Native Plants of “La Voz del Interior” (a Córdoba newspaper). Germination of the seeds was encouraged on this website.
We still continue to harvest seeds, including 20 more native species.
Why rebuild the woodland?
In the province of Córdoba the alarming reality is that less than 5% of the native flora remains and the cause of this loss is directly related to our clearance activities. For this reason, at Pumakawa we want to propose specific activities which will help our native woodland to be re-valued. To achieve this, the first step is to listen to the cry of nature begging us to stop felling as a matter of urgency. The second step is to take action, to learn more and to plant more native species.
In Pumakawa we have developed a bank of native seeds which will grow into plants for the reforestation of the mountains.
Together with Anita Martinez we learn to cultivate the native seeds
